The Inner Life—Finding an Hour to Just Be With God

The Inner Life worship service, with its contemplative format, music and liturgy, is offered as an additional worship style at Walnut Creek United Methodist Church.

If you are looking for a quiet place in the crazy making world of impacted schedules, impacted travel and impacted living, The Inner Life service could be meaningful for you.

Using quiet, simple music, scripture readings, and silence, this worship experience creates an environment of quiet contemplation. People who seek this service appreciate the beauty of silence, and find the opportunity to quiet a busy mind to enhance their communion with God.

Brother Roger of Taizé, France developed a unique style of worship in 1940, blending chants repeated in simple
harmonies, silence, prayer, and scripture. This worship style was an attempt to live the Gospel call to reconciliation day after day.

“Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, as its
high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one's heart when one is alone again.
When the mystery of God becomes tangible through the simple beauty of symbols, when it is not smothered
by too many words, then a common prayer, far from exuding monotony and boredom, awakens us to heaven's
joy on earth.” These words by Brother Roger characterize what has come to be known as the Taize worship style. The Inner Life worship service uses many elements of this style.

If you are searching for meaning, for commitment, or for a deeper relationship with God in prayer, for a chance to
meet other Christians, for an experience of community and contemplation rooted in the Gospel, this service is calling to you.
